Τα μέλη του Ελληνικού Συνδέσμου (Hellenic Link, Inc.) θα κληθούν εντός
ολίγου χρόνου να εκλέξουν Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο ( Board of Directors) για
τριετή θητεία, 2018-2020. Υπενθυμίζεται ότι δικαίωμα υποψηφιότητας και
συμμετοχής στην ψηφοφορία έχουν τα τακτικά μέλη του Συνδέσμου που
έχουν εκπληρώσει την ετήσια υποχρέωση συνδρομής μέλους.
Όσοι την οφείλουν καλούνται να την τακτοποιήσουν εγκαίρως, το
συντομότερο δυνατόν.
A R E M I N D E R
According to the by-laws, the members of the Hellenic Link, Inc. will be called shortly to elect a new Board of Directors for the next tenure period, 2018-2020. The eligibility to be a candidate, as well as of voting, is reserved for full members who have fulfilled their membership dues obligation. Those who owe this obligation are urged to take care the matter as soon as possible.
Review of Past Issues of the Bulletin
We inform our readers that certain issues of the Bulletin which were not previously available are now archived in the website of the Hellenic Link, Inc. and accessible for review ( http://www.helleniclink.org; click on the left column of the home page). This group of issues includes #141 (October-November 2016), #142 (December 2016), #143 (January 2017), # 144 (February 2017), and #145 (March 2017); a brief outline of the content of each of these issues follows as a guide to review:
# 141: The entire issue is devoted to an extraordinary public-school-event celebrating Greek Culture, organized by Greek- Parents-Members of the Multicultural Committee of the East Williston School District, in Long Island. The presentation focuses on the component parts of the event and the roles played and greetings given by the organizers. The issue features also a ten-page pamphlet under the title “It’s All Greek to Me!” developed by the Program Committee and distributed at dinner to all –over 250 – participants; the pamphlet is a kaleidoscopic introduction to Greek Culture, touching on such themes as Greek Traditions and Customs, on Eastern Orthodoxy, Greek Music and Dancing, the Menu of the Dinner with explanatory notations on Greek Cuisine, and info on Travel to and in Greece.
# 142: This issue reports mainly on a series of five interactive conferences held between the Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Professor Pericles Mitkas and the President of the School of Modern Greek Language Professor Marina Mattheoudaki visiting the USA, and representatives of three US academic institutions (Stony Brook U., NY; Queens College, City University of New York; and the University of Delaware) as well as with Administrators of the “Odyssey” Charter School of Wilmington DE and the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Link, Inc.; these conferences were aimed at reaching agreement on collaborative programs of education and came to conclude concrete partnerships, detailed in the report. The issue reprinted also the Announcement of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation instituting “Greek Diaspora Fellowships” aimed at alleviating Greece’s current problematic brain drain.
# 143: This issue expresses the mourning of the Greek Community of America for the loss of Rev. Demetrios Constantelos, distinguished spiritual leader, academic scholar and teacher. In the same issue, Professor Nicholas Economides of New York University writes on “How Greece’s Troubled Economy Could Turn Around in 2017.”
# 144: Issue dedicated to Greek Letters and to those who toil promoting and defending them: Archbishop Demetrios Geron of America pays tribute to the late Rev. Dr. Demetrios Constantelos, author Dr. Maria-Eleftheria Giatrakou contributes a dedicatory article Ο Ποιητής Οδυσσέας Ελύτης και Ερμηνευτική.Προσέγγιση στο Ποίημά του Το «Τρελοκάραβο»(The Poet Odysseas Elytis and an Interpretive Approach to his Poem “ The crazy-ship.”
# 145: This issue presents the innovative summer training program for foreign students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on Applied Archaeology, in combination with a short course of Modern Greek Language. It also cites recent correspondence with members and readers as well as with the Foundation of Hellenic Civilization of Italy and with the Professional Organization of Greek Language and Culture Teachers of New York “Prometheas.”
«Θεοφάνης Σολωμός: Έφυγε Άξιος Επιστήμονας και Πατριώτης
Μεστός στα 88 του χρόνια, την 11 Ιουνίου 2017 αναχώρησε από τον κόσμο μας ο Θεοφάνης Σολωμός , PhD, Ομότιμος Καθηγητής του Πανεπιστημίου Maryland στο College Park, Τμήμα Επιστημών Φυσικών Πόρων και Αρχιτεκτονικής Τοπίου (Landscape).
Ο μεταστάς γεννήθηκε στο Χιλιομόδι Κορινθίας το 1928. Για πανεπιστημιακές σπουδές επέλεξε την Γεωπονίαν : Ανωτάτη Γεωπονική Σχολή Αθηνών (BS, 1956; MS στη Δενδροκομία, 1957) και στη συνέχεια University of Cambridge (PhD, στη Φυσιολογία Φυτών, 1963).
Μετά από προσωρινές ερευνητικές και διδακτικές θέσεις στην Αγγλία και Ελλάδα, διορίσθηκε Post-Doctoral Fellow στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Alberta Καναδά (1968-70) και Research Associate στο Τμήμα Βιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου της Καλιφόρνιας.
Από το 1975 συνεχίζει πλούσια παραγωγική ερευνητική και διδακτική εργασία στο Πολιτειακό Πανεπιστήμιο της Maryland, στην αρχή ως Βοηθός Καθηγητής , εν συνεχεία Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής και τελικά ως Full Professor, συνολικά για 33 χρόνια.
Στην έρευνά του ιδιαίτερα τον απασχόλησε η βιοχημική ωρίμανση και εξωγενείς παράγοντες που την επηρεάζουν καρπών όπως η μπανάνα ,το αβοκάντο, το μήhλο- και λαχανικών(ντομάτας,πατάτας) και σπόρων , όπως του σιταριού, των φασολιών και σόγιας
Ο πειραματικός προσδιορισμός της επίδρασης ατμοσφαιρικών συνθηκών αποθήκευσης και διακίνησης φρούτων και λαχανικών παρουσιάζει σημαντικό οικονομικό ενδιαφέρον. Την έρευνα αυτή ο Σολωμός διεξήγαγε επάνω σε βιοφυσικό και βιοχημικό βάθρο προσδιορίζοντας τις επιδράσεις ελεγχομένων ατμοσφαιρών οξυγόνου στην ενεργοποίηση ενζυματικής και φυτορμονικής δράσης στον ρυθμό και βαθμό ωρίμανσης. Σημαντική ήταν η συμβολή του στη βιοχημική απομόνωση και διατήρηση γενετικού υλικού ( cDNA, mRNA ) που καταλυτικά εκφράζει την ρύθμιση ωρίμανσης προϊόντων, που αναφέρονται παρα πάνω.
Η πανεπιστημιακή έρευνα του καθηγητή Σολωμού υποστηρίχθηκε χρηματικά από μία συνεχή ροή χορηγιών απο το Αμερικανικό Υπουργείο Γεωργίας ( USDA) καθώς και από άλλους φορείς. Η ποιοτική και ποσοτική παραγωγικότητά του αναγνωρίσθηκε με πολλαπλούς τρόπους σε διάφορες περιπτώσεις :
- To Πανεπιστήμιο Maryland τον εβράβευσε για τα έξοχα επιτεύγματά του.
- Σε μείζονα επιστημονικά συνέδρια και συμπόσια του ανατέθηκε η διεύθυνση ή ήταν προσκεκλημένος να προεδρεύσει σε ειδικές συνεδριάσεις (sessions).
- Έγινε τακτικός κριτής υποβαλλομένων προς δημοσίευσιν χειρογράφων έρευνας (manuscripts) σε πέντε έγκριτα επιστημονικά περιοδικά, καθώς και αιτήσεων χορηγήσεως ερευνητικού grant υποβαλλομένων στο Αμερικανικό Ιδρυμα Επιστήμης (Νational Science Foundation). Επίσης, κριτής χορηγιών της Υπηρεσίας Διεθνούς Ανάπτυξης ( US Agency for International Development).
- Έγινε μέντορας μεγάλου αριθμού πτυχιούχων φοιτητών (graduate students), 19 για το διδακτορικό ( PhD ) και 10 για το MS. Επί πλέον, εβοήθησε 30 άλλους πτυχιούχους φοιτητές σαν μέλος των επιτροπών τους καθοδήγησης σπουδών και διατριβής.
- Συνέγραψε εικοσάδες επιστημονικών άρθρων σε ένα ευρύ φάσμα έγκριτων περιοδικών.
- Εγραψε ή συνέγραψε με συνεργάτες 18 βιβλία επί θεμάτων της ερευνητικής του εργασίας. Ενα εξ αυτών , που δημοσιεύθηκε το 1994, επανεκδόθηκε πρόσφατα σε δεύτερη έκδοση τον Μάϊον 2017, ένα μήνα δηλαδή πριν από την τελευτήν του. Εξ άλλου, ενδεικτικό της εκτίμησης της παγκόσμιας επιστημονικής κοινότητας για την συνεχιζόμενη παραγωγικότητά του υψηλής ποιότητας, είναι και το ότι έλαβε μεταθανάτια πρόσκληση συμμετοχής σε δύο διεθνή επιστημονικά συνέδρια, το ένα στην Κίνα και το άλλο στο Μεξικό!
Αλλά και οι πολιτιστικές και πατριωτικές δραστηριότητες του Θεοφάνη Σολωμού
ήταν εξ ίσου εντατικές σε όλη την διάρκεια της σταδιοδρομίας του : στα χρόνια της παραμονής του στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, στα μέσα της δεκαετηρίδας του 1960, ήταν ενεργός υποστηρικτής της Ελληνοκυπριακής Κοινότητας τόσο στην Κύπρο όσο και στο Λονδίνο. Ακολούθως, στην περίοδο 1971-1975, αγωνίσθηκε ως μέλος του Συμβουλίου «Σώσετε την Κύπρο» στην Νότια Καλιφόρνια, και κατόπιν σαν μέλος των «Φίλων της Κύπρου» στην Washington, DC, την δεκαετία 1975-1985. Εκεί,δραστηριοποιήθηκε στο American Hellenic Council, στην Οργάνωση «Προμηθέας», στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο και στην προσπάθεια του «Κύκλου» για την διατήρηση της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας .
Με βαθειά λύπη, η εκλεκτή και αγαπημένη του σύζυγος Pamela, συνάδελφοι , φίλοι και συμπατριώτες τον αποχαιρέτησαν εις το Devol Funeral Home του Washington, DC την 17ην Ιουνίου 2017. Ακολούθησε ενταφιασμός στο Χιλιομόδι Κορινθίας

Ο Ελληνικός Σύνδεσμος συμμετέχει στην θλίψη για την απώλεια του εκλεκτού συναδέλφου,
Χαίρει όμως και συγχαίρει για την λαμπρά και νικηφόρο έκβαση του επίγειου αγώνα του σαν άνθρωπος και σαν Ελληνοαμερικανός επιστήμονας. Είθε το παράδειγμά του να μιμηθούν πολλοί άλλοι! Και το χώμα της γενέτειρας Ελληνικής γης που τον σκεπάζει με περηφάνια, ας είναι ελαφρό!

Theophanes Solomos: A Worthy Scientist and Patriot Who Departed
Full in years at 88, Theophanes Solomos, PhD, Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland, College Park, Department of Natural Resources and Landscape Architecture, departed from our earthly world on June 11, 2017.
He was born in Chiliomodi of Corinth, Greece in 1928. After high school, for professional study he chose Agriculture: the Agricultural College of Athens (BS, 1956; MS in Pomology, 1957) and then the University of Cambridge ( PhD in Plant Physiology, 1963).
After some temporary research and teaching assignments in England and Greece, he was appointed Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Alberta in Canada (1968-1970), followed by Research Associate in the Biolgy Department of the University of California, USA.
Since 1975, he continued his very energetic productive research and teaching engagement at the University of Maryland, first as Assistant, then Associate, and eventually Full Professor in its faculty, totally for 33 continuous years.
Central direction of his research effort was the elucidation of the biochemical processes of maturation and of the exogenous factors affecting it of fruits, such as bananas, avocados, apples and of vegetables, such as tomatoes and potatoes, and of seeds, including wheat, beans and soy beans. The experimental determination of the influence of atmospheric conditions maintained in storage and in marketing of fruits and vegetables is of paramount economic importance. Professor Solomos conducted his investigations on a biophysical and biochemical basis ascertaining the activation of enzymic and plant hormone activity regulating maturation under controlled gaseous conditions. Considerable have been his contributions in isolating, purifying, and preserving plant genetic material (cDNA and mRNA), which catalytically express the regulation of maturation of products referred above.
The academic research of Professor Solomos has been supported financially by a constant flow of research grants from the USDA as well as other granting agencies, and his productivity has been broadly recognized in multiple ways, in various circumstances:
- The University of Maryland awarded him for his outstanding accomplishments.
- He served as chairperson in scientific conferences, symposia, and in special sessions of major scientific gatherings.
- He refereed manuscripts for publication in 5 eminent research journals as well as applications for research grants submitted to the National Science Foundation, and to the US Agency for International Development.
- He mentored 19 doctoral and 10 MS graduate students, while also served in dissertation committees of 30 other candidates.
- He co-authored scores of refereed articles on his collaborative research, published in a broad spectrum of scientific journals.
- He authored or co-authored 18 books on themes of his research work. One of these books, originally published in 1994, was republished in second edition this year, in May 2017, that is one month before his death. Indicative of the high esteem of the international scientific community for his incessant cutting-edge productivity was the fact that even after his deathx he kept receiving invitations to participate in international conferences (one from China and one from Mexico).
His civic and patriotic activities matched in zealous intensity those in his professional arena: in the years he spent in the United Kingdom (middle 1960s), he actively supported the Greek Cypriot community both in Cyprus and in London. In the period 1971-1975, when in USA, he participated energetically in the Council “Save Cyprus” of South California, and in the decade 1975-1985 as member of “Friends of Cyprus” in Washington, DC. There, he became active member of the American Hellenic Council, of the Association “Prometheas,” the Hellenic Center, and in the effort of “Kyklos” to preserve the Greek language.
With deep sorrow, his beloved spouse Pamela, his colleagues and friends bade him farewell in a ceremony at the Devol Funeral Home of Washington on June 17, 2017. Interment followed in Chiliomodi, Greece.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory, were asked to offer a contribution to the Program of Modern Greek Studies of the University of Maryland, in College Park:

it also rejoices and congratulates his family, the University of Maryland community, and all his Greek American friends, associates and co-workers for the splendid and fulfilled outcome of his endeavors as a human being motivated throughout life by the highest values and exercising them as an outstanding Scientist and Educator. May his living example be emulated by many more! And may the Greek soil that covers him with justified pride be light!

- Οι έννοιες κόβουν γόνατα κ’ οι λογισμοί γερνάνε: Οι έμμονες σκέψεις γύρω από προβλήματα της καθημερινότητας παραλύουν το θυμικό του ανθρώπου για έξοδο από αυτά και γηράζουν πρόωρα αυτόν που εξουσιάζεται από αγχώδεις λογισμούς.
- Ο φρόνιμος την πίκρα του παρηγοριά την κάνει: Ο συνετός και αυτεξούσιος άνθρωπος αντιμετωπίζει τις αντιξοότητες της ζωής θετικά με πίστη και προσευχή και έτσι βρίσκει ανακούφιση.
- Όλη η θάλασσα αρμυριά μα τόπους τόπους λύσσα: Ολοι οι άνθρωποι στην ζωή τους γεύονται ενα μέτρο ανεκτής δυστυχίας, μερικοί όμως ταλανίζονται υπερβολικά και ανυπόφορα.
