Student-Views on their Hellenic Studies<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

With the end of another school year, it is reasonable and appropriate for educational institutions to make and issue evaluations of the past year\u2019s educational performance on the basis of professional criteria, in order to consolidate improvements and eliminate negative assessments.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the USA, this elementary process of educational progress is not currently feasible in the field of Hellenic Education, for the simple reason that the actors offering Hellenic Studies at the three educational levels are numerous, generally acting autonomously, and necessarily not comprehensively, that is without communication and coordination with each other for mutual interest and benefit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Hellenic Link (HL), among its other cultural activities, is also an actor in Hellenic Education, as it draws on the professional resources of its members and co-workers to design and collaboratively build an educational infrastructure, attain standardization of the Modern Greek Language and its nationwide teaching\/learning, including augmentation of its academic teaching by promoting study abroad programs at Hellenic Universities. Unfortunately, HL is likewise not in a position to offer an integrated review of the field, for the exact same reason of functioning in a climate discouraging cooperaration and synergism. Convinced that a change in this climate — favoring communication and convergence of all actors involved, would spell a great move towards upgrading Hellenic Education in the USA — HL keeps its pursuit active in its plans, contacts and projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the meantime, however, what about informing the interested community about the present status of Hellenic studies in the country?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite the limited light we have at present on the status of Hellenic Education from appropriate educational authorities, we should not underestimate the value of assessments made directly by students. After all what matters gravely, the entire circle of annual educational activities is centered on achieving progress for the individual student; and, he\/she is the most fitting judge and commentator to give insights about the quality and value of the dispensation of learning in schooling, the degree of fulfillment of his\/her aspirations in the process, and the post-graduation outcome proof, provided by intellectual, professional and social\/ethical performance of the individual.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this issue, the Hellenic Link Bulletin <\/em>offers its columns on Education to students who wished to present themselves to the community and the world, and their study at the School of Modern Greek Language of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Philosophy Faculty of Aristotle University<\/p><\/div>\n

This is one of the overseas programs on Hellenic Education, specially hosted by Greece for international students. We present letters we received from 3 students of this School who, writing in their native English as well as in admirably learned Greek, explain in their own biomatic style the significance of their academic and life experience with the Greek language and culture in Thessaloniki, while keepimg in mind their compatriot peers in America; they extend a vivid invitation to them to follow their experience in gaining the same advantages of high learning, precious life experience of the real world away from home, and dynamically preparing for their future studies and eventual career.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My name is Aris Spirtos, and I am 26 years old. \u00a0 I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Ohio. I decided to come to Thessaloniki because I wanted to learn the Greek language as well as immerse myself in the life of the Orthodox Church, the Greek culture, and to connect with my Greek roots. Approximately four years ago, I began developing a strong interest in Orthodox theology, the history of the Church, Byzantine music, and the Greek language. I had a desire to study and live in a place where I could immerse myself in the things that I love, and Greece was the logical choice.<\/p>\n

I have been studying at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Modern Greek Language since August of 2015. I completed the one-month intensive language summer course, and I am currently enrolled in the eight-month intensive language program. These courses have offered me the chance to learn Greek from extremely competent professors who are truly masters of the language. Also, my classmates are from all around the world, and this has given me the unique and rare opportunity to study in a global environment.<\/p>\n

I have had the opportunity to travel to many breathtaking places throughout Greece and Europe. I climbed to the very top of Mount Olympus, visited many holy monasteries on Mount Athos and Meteora, ran the original Marathon course in Athens, and explored the ancient ruins of Rome. On the weekend of March 25, I took the bus to Amaliada and met my relatives for the first time. It was a truly magical weekend filled with stories, laughter, delicious home-cooked Greek food, church services, and Greek dancing. While I was there, I ran a 12 Kilometer race from Ancient Ilida to Amaliada. I am the sentimental, romantic type, and running this race was significant to me because my great-grandparents were born in Amaliada; in my head I was thinking, \u201cI am running back to my roots!\u201d During the race, an incredibly physically fit elderly gentleman started running beside me. He initiated the conversation (in Greek, of course) and told me he was 71 years old. I was impressed and slightly intimidated because the race was more than half way over, and he was keeping pace with a 26 year old! In Greek, I responded and asked him if he had any advice for me. He told me three things: Soul, Move your Body, and Work. I interpreted his advice as the following: keep your mind and soul focused on God, keep exercising your body, and whatever you do in life will require hard work. I believe this man\u2019s wisdom is something that we can all aspire to attain and to keep in our hearts.<\/p>\n

Besides traveling in my spare time to pursue my personal interests, I was unexpectedly presented with a unique opportunity to travel to the border of Northern Greece to help with the refugee situation. I travelled there with four other men with the intent of serving food to the refugees. Upon arrival, we were informed that there were already sufficient numbers of volunteers serving food. As a result, we walked around the area near the border of Northern Greece and FYROM, engaged in conversation with the refugees, and helped any way we could. \u00a0 I can remember one conversation in particular with a 25 year-old man born in Bangladesh. He was working in Iraq, but had to leave due to the unstable political and economic situation. After telling me about his life and current circumstances, he told me something that has stayed with me since our encounter: \u201cIf you help people, God will help you.\u201d I am certain that the act of extending a hand to lift people up who are need of assistance is something we can all strive to do every single day. Even though I only spent an afternoon at the border, I am convinced that there are still many people who care about the well-being of others. The selflessness of the many volunteers and the \u03a6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03be\u03b5\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u2014 which literally means \u201cfriend to the foreigner\/stranger\u201d displayed by Greece reassures my faith in humanity. I am confident that this path of showing genuine kindness and concern for others is the best way to lift one another up and will create a better environment for humans to co-exist and flourish.<\/p>\n

It is my sincere hope that people will take advantage of the opportunity to study and live in Thessaloniki, Greece. The opportunities to forge new friendships, help those who are in need, travel throughout Greece and Europe, and gain wisdom and knowledge are truly unlimited. I am confident that those who desire to travel to Greece will find what they are looking for and will undoubtedly create bonds and memories that will last forever.<\/p>\n

Despite being born and raised in the United States I was fortunate to live, study and grow in Thessaloniki. During my 5 years in Greece, from 2010 until 2015 I was able to witness modern history while completing my Bachelors, Masters, and Greek language studies.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Greece is a real place. By this I don\u2019t only mean the iconic images of the islands and historical sites of Athens. It is not just blue sea and sun. I arrived in Thessaloniki on a rainy day, and like any other place it seemed gloomy. There are crowded streets and traffic like other cities and a few buildings that are not ascetically pleasing. However as I explored the city I found the beauty. It is not only in the ruins, the sun, and amazing views, but in the people and the life. Everyone was open and excited to share their food and culture with me. My local baker and the people at the market knew me by name when I bought fresh bread and produce daily. The crowded streets are lined with coffee shops and restaurants full of people just talking and stopping for awhile to embrace the day. At night endless options are available for fun, from clubs to simple quiet places for ouzo or wine.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Greece is a real place. When I arrived in 2010 it was the start of the economic crisis. When I left in 2015, major political changes and graphic headlines still filled news papers and other media with images of protest and violence. During these five years of graphic headlines I saw my daily life change very little. In fact, I would say it improved. I saw many Peaceful Protest that had no effect on my day, often students discussing what they could do for their country and create ways to improve the situation. Yet this story never made it into the newspaper. I saw people arguing on the streets and on TV about politics, sometimes raising their voices, quite comparable to the political dialogue in the present election in the United States.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Greece is a real place where life goes on despite what people see on TV. A place where I went to my Modern Greek course and Masters courses at Aristotle University every day. I was in a building where I learned, discussed, and researched. Where like anywhere else, I was challenged to do my best. Despite the crisis I had every resource I needed to study. The courses of Modern Greek immersed me into Greek culture, challenging me to use what I have learned.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Greece is a real place that has its struggles. However the story that you read about in the news about this country from 2010 to 2015 is not my story. In fact I can say it is only a story, because these images are not the picture of what really happened. My story is about a country where I felt safe walking the streets by the seaside and the castle. I became fluent in a language and finished multiple degrees. I met people, learned to think and see life from a new perspective in an institution (Aristotle University) that was excited to teach me. The images of my story are of the sea, White Tower, food, and friends.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Thessaloniki \u00a0 is a city where I have amazing memories and is a place where anyone can make their own. At any moment, one can see and feel culture and history. In this city I learned inside and outside the classroom. Since my return I have encouraged all to go to see Greece and have spoken on numerous occasions at events encouraging others to study in this amazing place that I call home.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I have been studying in Thessaloniki, Greece since February of 2015. I am now taking the fourth level of Greek language courses at the School of Modern Greek. The school has helped me learn Greek extremely quickly, while also offering chances to see important sites around Northern Greece. The teachers I\u2019ve taken classes with have been extremely kind and helpful, and are more like friends than teachers. The classes are great because one can also meet students from all over the world who are studying to learn Greek as well! Thessaloniki is a place for young people. Everyone is enjoying the weather, drinking coffee for hours, and socializing. What is better than taking a walk down the seaside with one\u2019s friends and enjoying the beauty of this unique city. The people here are very chill and relaxed and you will not be able to help yourself from smiling, because everywhere you go people are smiling! Thessaloniki is truly the city that never sleeps. You can go out with your friends any day of the week, and find something fun to do. Because it is such a young people\u2019s city, you feel very safe walking around at night. Never have I felt threatened or in danger like they show on the media. The truth is, everyone is just enjoying their coffees. So if you want to study in a city where you can meet amazing people, and be immersed into the Greek culture, definitely choose Thessaloniki. There\u2019s something special about this place and it makes me never want to leave!<\/p>\n

The Bulletin <\/em>wishes to congratulate the 3 students for reaching the fulfillment of their expectations of their study at the Aristotle University, especially for their amazing progress In learning the Greek language, and for familiarizing themselves so naturally with the Greek culture and people. Their eloquent public testimony to recognize the help they received from their School in achieving their goals is particularly commendable. Conversely, we wish to applaud the School of Modern Greek Language for the quality of its effective programs, aimed at imparting to international students the proficient learning of the Greek Language, and real acquaintance with the people\u2019s culture, despite the unmitigated bad socioeconomic circumstances prevailing in the country and in its geographical vicinity.The School is really doing wonders in raising the linguistic and cultural capacity of its international students, who include young members of the Greek American community, enrolled in the summer or academic year programs of the School. In conclusion, the future of the Greek American community, shaped by citizens actuated by the knowledge and the ideals expressed by the letter-writers, can be, indeed, a bright one. We wish and hope that more young people from our communities will follow the same productive educational path!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
