We are pleased to bring to the attention of the members of the Hellenic Link and the readers of the Bulletin<\/em> two significant resources for learning Modern Greek that will become available to American and Greek American students in the summer of 2016. As we previously made known, the academic institutions offering this new educational opportunity are in Greece, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Patras.<\/p>\n

The Greek language Programs of both Universities are of the highest quality and so designed to integrate well with the curricula of US academic institutions awarding the baccalaureate degree after a four-year study. The Programs are particularly suitable for students in hundreds of US colleges and universities that do not include Modern Greek among their foreign language offerings. Significantly, for Greek American students attending these academic institutions, the opportunity afforded by the Hellenic programs in many cases represents the last (before leaving behind the domain of formal education), if not the only ever chance to satisfy their home institution\u2019s foreign language requirement in combination with a thorough acquaintance of the language-vehicle of the superb civilization attained by their country of origin, Hellas, of which, no doubt, they are proud.<\/p>\n

These Hellenic university courses are scheduled for the summer; additional multiple benefits, which will accrue for the participant students were explained and commented analytically by colleagues in the Advisory Council on Hellenic Education of our Association in previous issues of the Bulletin (see #119, July 2014 and #125, February 2015). <\/em>In this issue, we present the content of the finalized Program for the summer 2016, as publicized by the two Greek Universities themselves: attached to the Bulletin <\/em>are comprehensive brochures, which enlighten prospective students and every interested person about the content and logistics of the Program courses, offered respectively by the two institutions.<\/p>\n

The Hellenic Link, Inc., which played a constructive role in launching this Program in a truly willing, two-way collaboration, calls its members and friends to become deliberately active in the dissemination of the information provided in the attachments and to energetically assist in the campaign to attract students for enrollment in the university of their choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The same duty would be applicable to every member of the Greek American community, who is concerned culturally for the future of the Greek American youth and who also believes that the community carries a mandate to make cultural contributions to the country, worthy of the Hellenic Heritage.<\/p>\n

Intensive summer course in Modern Greek Language for American & Greek-American students<\/strong><\/p>\n

About the course<\/u><\/h1>\n

The aim of the course is to help all participants get acquainted with the Greek culture, history and everyday life in Greece and to improve their communication skills with Greek native speakers. Greek- American students will have the opportunity to retrieve basic elements of their heritage and tradition. The course offers Greek language classes (120 academic hours), cultural activities, educational trips (3 one-day trips) and workshops.<\/p>\n

Number of participants: 20-30. A minimum number of 20 participants is required for the materialization of the course. The number of students per class will range between 10 and 15.<\/p>\n

-Language instruction<\/u><\/p>\n

The language classes aim to help learners improve their proficiency in all language components and skills.<\/p>\n

Language classes will be held both indoors \u2013 in the classrooms of the School of Modern Greek Language (old building of Philosophy Faculty and French Institute) and outdoors during educational visits to Museums, open-air markets, walks in the city etc. from Monday to Friday.<\/p>\n

-Pronunciation classes<\/u><\/p>\n

These lessons aim to provide strategies for the improvement of pronunciation through games, songs, videos, etc. They focus on the teaching of tone, intonation, rhythm, etc.<\/p>\n

-Language laboratory<\/u><\/p>\n

At the language laboratory you will have the opportunity to practice your language skills through the use of computers and information technology with the assistance of an ICT expert teacher.<\/p>\n

During the course you will have the opportunity to take part in various cultural activities such as:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Attendance \/ Credits<\/h1>\n

Attendance of language classes is compulsory.<\/p>\n

\u0391 Certificate of Attendance (in Greek) and a Transcript of Records (in English) will be given to those students who have attended at least 80% of the total number of hours of instruction and participated successfully in the final exam. Students will receive 3 credits for the three-week course.<\/p>\n

Cost<\/strong><\/p>\n

600\u20ac\/student\/6 week course <\/strong>(including: language classes, participation in field trips, cultural \u00a0 activities\/ workshops and guided tours)<\/p>\n

Social Program<\/u><\/h1>\n

A welcome reception \/ orientation will be provided the first day of the course, while a farewell reception \/ certificate award ceremony will be organized at the end of the course.<\/p>\n

Networking<\/u><\/h1>\n

A range of networking opportunities will become available to you during the course as you will be interacting with teachers, Greek students, student organizations and people met during excursions and field trips.<\/p>\n

Visa \/ entrance stamp<\/strong><\/p>\n

Participants who have completed their registration will be provided with an acceptance letter to submit to the Greek Diplomatic Authorities in order to apply for a visa (in case this is needed). In any case make sure that your passport is stamped during your entrance in Europe.<\/p>\n

Insurance<\/strong><\/p>\n

Participants are advised to have comprehensive travel and medical insurance for the duration of the course, covering expenses that may arise in connection with injury or illness (including any pre-existing condition), emergency repatriation costs, personal liability, loss or damage to personal effects, cancellation, and additional expenses incurred that relate to any of the above risks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Arrival and Departure<\/h1>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thessaloniki as most modern cities today may be reached by plane, train or bus. By plane<\/u><\/p>\n

The easiest way to get to Thessaloniki is by a direct fly to the city\u2019s airport called \u201cMakedonia <\/a>International Airport<\/a>\u201d (www.thessalonikiairport.com)<\/a> serving both international and domestic flights. Public transportation buses working on 24\/7 basis transfer travellers to the city centre.<\/p>\n

By train<\/u><\/p>\n

The National Railway Company is called \u2018OSE\u201d (www.ose.gr)<\/a>. Thessaloniki\u2019s Railway Station is centrally located (28, Monastiriou Street) and is conveniently connected with the rest of the city via public transportation.<\/p>\n

By bus<\/u><\/p>\n

The national Bus Company is called \u201cKTEL\u201d. Thessaloniki is connected by bus with the majority of Greek cities (www.ktelmacedonia.gr\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Accommodation and meals are not included in the cost of participation. Students will need to cover relevant expenses by themselves. The School of Modern Greek Language was founded at the Aristotle University in 1970 and has been operating ever since under the supervision of the Faculty of Philosophy.<\/p>\n

The School offers courses in the Greek language and culture to foreign students and also to students of Greek origin, who intend to study in Greek Educational Institutions, or wish, through the Greek language, to familiarize themselves with Greece and its culture (ancient, byzantine and modern). The Center for Hellenic Studies at Stony Brook University hosted a series of community outreach, education and fundraising events. The events, aimed to further engage the Greek \u2013American community, as well as plant additional seeds of Hellenism and awareness of Greece, took place over the year and were well attended by faculty, students, and members of the community. Our fundraising activities sought to support the operational budget of the Center and maintain the support of our friends. The activities can be divided in 3 categories and are listed below:<\/p>\n

  1. Events<\/strong>
    \n– On April 19, a great concert took place co-sponsored by the Center and the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption. The concert, titled \u2018Rebetiko to perpetuity\u2019 was led and organized by Gregoris Maninakis and the Mikrokosmos Ensemble and featured another singer and bouzouki soloist from Greece; it explored the origins of Rebetika and connected them to the American Blues as a form of artistic expression.
    \n– On April 30, we hosted at the University a lecture by Prof. Ioannis Stefanidis from Aristotelian University in Thessaloniki titled ‘The post-war origins of the Cyprus Question.’ The lecture was open to faculty and students as well as community members. It was supported by the Onassis Foundation.
    \n– On September, 10 the Stony Brook department of Linguistics hosted a lecture by Prof. Ioanna Sitaridou from Cambridge University on ‘Language Continuity, Contact and Change: the Greek (Romeyka) varieties in Turkey today’; she introduced us to the spoken Greek on the regions around old Trapezounta in Turkey. The language is an interesting and unique combination of Greek and Turkish.
    \n– On October 21, we hosted again an activity supported by the Onassis Foundation. The book: ‘The Scapegoat’ by Sophia Nicolaidou, translated by Karen Emmerich, was presented to students, faculty and community members by both the author and the translator.
    \n– On October 28, we hosted the screening of Vassilis Loules’ documentary “Kisses to the Children.” The documentary presented the lives of 5 Greek Jewish children saved by Greek Christian families during WW2 in Greece; it was an event that brought closer the Jewish and Greek communities, both supporting the event.
    \n– On October 29, our Greek and Cypriot student Organization celebrated the \u2018OXI\u2019 day with presentations, slide shows, music and dances; it was a delightful event, and very impressive in its organization and delivery.
    \n– On November 15, the Greek and Cypriot student Organization participated in the Kultura festival – Representation of cultures; the students showcased and performed Greek dances in this multicultural event on the SBU campus, becoming once again ambassadors of Hellenic culture.2. 2nd annual poetry competition for high school students<\/strong>
    \nWe continued with our outreach activities by advertising and hosting a competition for poetry, with poems expressing a Hellenic theme. The competition was announced to all Suffolk county highschools and Greek schools. Poems received were evaluated and three awards were given: 1st prize $500; 2nd prize $250; 3rd prize $100. These were meaningful poems, encouraging high schoolers to think, read and write about Greece.3. Modern Greek classes\/ Hellenic Studies minor<\/strong>
    \nThis academic year we have active the Elementary (GRK121) and Advanced (GRK321) classes. The enrollment is 10 students for GRK121 and 6 in GRK321 (and they are enrolling for the Spring continuation classes as well). There are 5 students currently enrolled in the Hellenic minor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We continue to be enthusiastic about the progress and presence we maintain in Suffolk county, and we only hope that the coming year will be even better than the one coming to an end.<\/p>\n
