Teaching Modern Greek is Gradually Taking its Place in US Education

In the context of their ongoing endeavor to develop "National Standards for the Teaching of Modern Greek," the Hellenic Link Task-Force and collaborating Modern Greek Language Teachers Association (MGLTA) were instrumental in establishing a Modern Greek Special Interest Group (SIG), consisting of educators teaching the language, affiliated with the American Council for Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL). This SIG is scheduled to take active part in the 2011 ACTFL Annual Convention and World Languages Expo to be held in Denver, CO Nov.18-20, 2011(The Convention Program is available online on ACRFL's website:www.actfl.org). As stated in the ACTFL Newsletter of July 21, 2011, the Modern Greek SIG will have the following mission and goals:

"The Modern Greek SIG will provide a forum for the Modern Greek language and culture teaching community. SIG members will share their expertise and will promote the best teaching practices and the use of most recent research in the field of Modern Greek across all levels, K through 16. The SIG will provide opportunities to its members to develop strategies for articulation across levels, and will play a leading role in connecting educators who will share expertise in teaching methods, assessment, teacher development and uses of new technologies in teaching and learning Modern Greek.

The mission of the Modern Greek SIG is:

Interested in adding this SIG to your existing ACTFL membership? Contact us at membership@actfl.org. The cost to add this or any SIG to your ACTFL membership is $5/year for each SIG. We look forward to your participation! Learn more about the Modern Greek SIG"

We value this development as a hopeful and promising harbinger for the creation of a suitable environment to establish mechanisms for a continual improvement of teaching Modern Greek in America as well as for upgrading the professional status of teachers of Greek. We recommend to Hellene Educators to respond positively to the ACTFL invitation to join its membership.

Hellenic Cultural Events on the International Scene in the News

Byzantium & its Continuities @ Delphi Centre

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 03:41 AM PDT

Byzantium and its continuity was the central theme of this year's 17th Delphi International Symposium at the European Cultural Centre of Delphi (ECCD). Twenty experts in Byzantine past and culture discussed the course of the Byzantine Empire through history.

More specifically, they addressed three thematic sections: Byzantium and Greek-Roman Antiquity; Byzantium's Radiance; Byzantine Survivals in Post-Byzantine Years and Byzantium Today.

Parallel events scheduled to take place between June 28 and July 27 included a painting and religious objects exhibition, an international symposium, concerts of Byzantine music, ancient Greek language and culture seminars as well as theatre performances.

ECCD board chairperson and noted Paris-based historian and Byzantium specialist Helene Glykatzi-Ahrweiler underlined that this year's events were to focus on Byzantium, from a political, cultural and artistic point of view.

Prof. Greg Stephanopoulos of MIT Receives Highly Competitive Award

W.H. Dow Professor at M.I.T, Gregory Stephanopoulos, has been awarded the prestigious 2011 Eni Award for his groundbreaking research on modifying the genetic structure of bacteria with the goal of making them more efficient for transforming renewable raw materials. An example would be the transformation of domestic waste into hydrocarbons. More about Professor Stephanopoulos and his research are available by video in the link below:

The Eni Award, presented by the Italian oil company Eni, is given to individuals who have made significant achievements in environmental research and better uses of alternative energy. It's a highly coveted award with strict guidelines and a panel that includes Nobel laureates. Eni's ambition is for its Eni Award to become the "Nobel Prize for Energy."
